Screen-off and background-friendly

Screen-off breathing guidance without a visible phone session.

BreathFriend is designed for moments when you want to follow a breathing rhythm through a watch, haptics or sound rather than keeping a bright phone screen in front of you.

See it in everyday use

Keep your phone down and let your watch lead.

This short demo shows how subtle watch cues can guide a breathing session at a desk without turning the exercise into another phone interaction.

  • Start from a compatible Wear OS watch.
  • Use haptics or sound for phase changes.
  • Stay present without watching a large animation.
  • Pause or stop whenever you need to.

What “screen-off” means in BreathFriend

Screen-off use means the active breathing rhythm does not require continuous visual attention. Depending on your settings, the watch can communicate phase changes through haptics or sound while the phone stays away.

This is useful at a desk, during travel or before sleep. It can also make a breathing exercise feel less performative in public because you are not holding a phone with a large animation on screen.

What the experience depends on

Mobile and wearable operating systems apply battery and background limits. Exact behavior can vary by device, Wear OS version, battery saver mode, app permissions and manufacturer settings. Test a short session on your own watch before relying on background guidance.

Practical setupBefore relying on audio or haptics, test a short session, confirm the cue volume or vibration intensity and check that battery restrictions are not stopping the app.

Choose the cue that fits the situation

  • At work: haptic cues can keep the session private.
  • Before sleep: quiet audio or haptics can reduce screen exposure.
  • During travel: watch guidance avoids juggling a phone.
  • During a focus break: a short preset can start and finish without opening other apps.

Choose an eyes-free cue

Screen-off use depends on the cue system and the device.

Compare native watch haptics with phone audio, visual pacing and built-in tools before deciding what will work in your real environment.
